Tunnel Cottages at Blaen-nant-y-groes Farm
Blaen-nant-y-groes is a former hill farm which comprises a farm-house with three adjoining stone cottages, a barn and stables, all set in fifteen acres of upland grazing and woodland.
Situated on the edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park, the town of Aberdare has a variety of shops as well as a covered market. Tesco and Asda supermarkets are both 10 minutes away. Swansea and the Gower coast are 45 minutes drive. Cardiff, the Millenium Centre and Stadium are 30 minutes drive and both Cwmbach and Aberdare railway stations are 5 minutes away with trains every 30 minutes to the capital. The market town of Brecon with its international jazz festival, agricultural and farmers market and antique shops, is 30 minutes away.
Location and Attractions
Runners will be inspired by the legendary feats of endurance of Guto Nyth Bran who inspired the annual Nos Galan races. Fresh water fishing is available locally on Nant Moel and Meardy reservoirs, and golf at nearby Aberdare Golf Club. The Celtic Manor Golf Resort is forty minutes away by car (much closer by helicopter) which is hosting the 2009 Ryder Cup. If you want to improve your climbing or pot-holing skills before taking on the challenges of the Brecon Beacons, Europe's biggest indoor climbing wall and indoor pot-hole is just down the road at the Welsh International Climbing Centre at Trelewis.
Railway enthusiasts must visit the narrow gauge Brecon Mountain Railway.
The Locality and Environment
The farm has access to a large area designated open countryside with a network of footpaths, bridleways & mountain bike trails. Horse riding is a very popular activity in the area and the property has stables which are available for visitors livery. There is a locking barn which is used for cycles and other outdoor pursuits equipment - we do see hang gliders and parasailers taking off from the hilltop above the farm!
Guests enjoying these attractions need not set foot, wheel or hoof on the public highway to gain access to this 'great outdoors'. It's the equivalent of 'ski-ing to your chalet.
Facilities are available for washing and drying muddy boots, clothes and equipment. The flagstone floors are warmed by heat pumped from the ground, and we have retained the eco-friendly but more traditional log fires.
